Performance Grade Asphalt
In 2003, API launched a new product - Polymer Modified Binder (Performance Grade Asphalt). Performance Grade Asphalt is a binder designed to reduce rutting and shoving (similar to folds in a carpet) at roundabouts or high-stress areas. The product is designed to suit specific climatic conditions and heavy traffic loads. It allows for modification and improvement on the stiffness, flexibility and temperature and could add another five (5) to ten (10) years on the life of the roads in the region.
Performance Grade was developed by API in association with the Asphalt Institute. The two organisations worked hand in hand to develop the perfect binder to suit the specific conditions of the region's steep inclines and roads.
The product was tested at the Frank Walcott Roundabout between University Drive and Spring Garden, St. Michael, Barbados, during practical sessions of a seminar hosted by API entitled "Innovations in Asphalt Technology". This seminar attracted 50 participants from across the region.
